Survival food kits are one of the most popular items people buy. However, the true survivalist knows that those kits will eventually be gone. I’ve previously written on building a survival food kit, but there is one question we need to answer with a survival food challenge. What will you do when your stockpile runs out?
No one knows what will happen in the future and most preppers try to plan for the situations they are most likely to face. However, the lack of food is one common threat to everyone and not just those in the prepper community.
The most difficult meal you can make
There is one survival meal that I believe every prepper should be able to make. Unfortunately, it is also one of the hardest and labor intensive meals there is. It requires a lot of hard work and the skills necessary to make it take time to learn.
The survival food challenge involves you eating a complete meal of things you have produced yourself. As I mentioned earlier, this particular meal is one that requires you to learn some new skills. You need to know how to grow a garden and how to preserve the things you harvest.
Producing the food you eat will give you a whole new outlook on the skills you should learn. The mistakes you make on your journey will be some of the best lessons of your life that you will not easily forget.
Grow a garden of food you will eat
For the past several weeks we have been working as a family to preserve various foods from our garden and what we’ve harvested from different parts of our farm. The foods we have added to our supply will make many good meals.
The types of foods we try to grow and preserve are those we like to eat because if you don’t want to eat it, why would you want to raise it? We also have some treats like jelly and blackberries which can be used to make deserts.
Add some meat to your survival meal
The fruits and vegetables you grow in your garden should not be your only source of food. Every diet needs some good source of protein and the most common source for it is meats.
Another good food source would be fishing. As the old saying goes, give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, you feed him for life. Fishing is a fun pass-time with great rewards.
Raising livestock or hunting will provide you with a meat source. Raising chickens is not very difficult but gives you the ability to gather eggs and can also provide you with a meat source. It is also a food source that is replenished easily in most cases.
As you start building your meal for the survival food challenge you will easily see the need to learn new skills. Those skills are the biggest benefit for completing this challenge.
